“We are confronted with a very worrying situation in this municipality and that has to do with illegal mining” – Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo, Municipal Chief Executive cries out when addressing the first ordinary meeting of the first Session of the 8th Assembly of Abuakwa south municipal Assembly.

He revealed that, though the municipality is doing very well in development and abiding by the Covid-19 hygiene protocols, however, incessant activities of the galamseyers in the municipality is rather overshowing the good works of the assembly.

“All the reports i’m getting from the big house, the jubilee house, government officials, all the negative reports that i’m getting has to do with the illegal mining and we all know the decision of our president to ban illegal mining. This is so because when these activities go on, we end up destroying our environment, we destroy the vegetation that gives us the kind of environment that we are enjoying here. Lands are not reclaimed, we don’t bring back the land to use. We don’t plant new trees on these degraded lands and that is a worrying situation” – Hon. kojo Ofori-Safo revealed.

He added that the other aspect have to do with the destruction of the water bodies and illegally hoarding of irregular immigrants in the municipality. The hardworking MCE said he has constantly been getting calls from the lands ministry and national security urging him to take control.

“The complains come when they travel from Accra to Kumasi and see they see the colour of the Birim river. They are not talking more about our achievements but the destruction of our water bodies. And this is damaging the hard earned achievements that this assembly has made so i urge all of us to come together to end this illegal mining and revert to the president’s Community mining” – Hon. Kojo Ofori-Safo added.

Moreover, he used the opportunity to advise the assembly members to intensify sensitization of abiding by the hygiene protocols in order not to contract the deadly Covid-19 pandemic in the municipality.
