The flag-bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, John Dramani Mahama has chastised the president of the republic of Ghana H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his enormous borrowing in his almost 4 years in government.

According to the former head of state, Nana Addo Dankwa has borrowed a lot in his tenure but has nothing to show. He added that the president is only good at borrowing money to buy food and drinks.

Addressing the chiefs in his tour to the Volta region, Mr Mahama said, “No body progresses a nation by consuming. You progress a nation by investing in capital development. You progress a nation by investing in productivity and that is the vision i have. You don’t go to the bank and borrow money to bring to the house so that your wife and you will eat food, drink beer and live good. You go to the bank to borrow money because you want to invest it and let the money grow. You go to borrow money because you want to re-roof your house. You go to borrow money because your want to have an extension to your farm. That is what we borrow money for. You don’t borrow money to eat and drink and that is what we have done” – Mr Mahama said.

He maintained that government has borrowed GHS140 billion since assumption of office in 2017 but has nothing to show. He added that if the president stops travelling, the amount involved in his expenses would be used for development in the country.

“In four years, the Akufo government has borrowed more than 140 billion Cedis, so the simple question Ghanaians should ask is, what have you done with the money? Where are the schools, the roads, electricity, water, the hospitals, and harbours?”, Mr Mahama queried.
