After spotting some pastors seriously praying on the Accra – Kumasi highway to avert the rate of occurrence of road crashes on the highway, the eastern regional manager of the National Road safety Authority, NRSA, Mr Abdulai Bawa Gamsah has added his voice to the trending video.

According to him, the authority as well as the the citizenry does not need a soothsayer to reveal the causes of road crashes on the eastern region especially on the Accra – Kumasi highway.

In a phone interview with Obido Nana Gyasi on Friday, 2nd October 2020 on Dawhoso (a roadsafety program on Radio 1 100.7fm), Mr Abdulai Bawa Gamsah though acknowledged the impacts of prayers but is of the view that it falls outside the four pillars the authority anchors on.

He added that if the prayers could avert accidents like the pastors claim, then the establishment of National Road safety Authority is irrelevant.

“If pastors can pray to avert Road crashes then NRSA has no work to do. The reality is that Road safety is anchored on 4 pillars; Education, Enforcement, Engineering and Emergency response. Any of these 4 if it is not correct, accident will happen” – Mr Gamsah said.

Moreover, the regional manager noted that most of the vehicles that involve in accidents on the highway are vehicles from the northern part of the country and by his analysis, fatigue is the major cause.

“What is the cause of the accidents in the eastern region? Most of the accidents happen between Nsawam and Suhum. The very bad ones happen between 3am and 6am and the vehicles involved come from the Upper East region. Most of the busus that have killed people on the road are loaded from Bawku, Bolga or Nkoranza. So you don’t need a soothsayer to tell you the cause of the accidents, that is fatigue, the drivers are sleeping.” – Mr Gamsah maintained.

He therefore advised that the pastors support in the physical way to educate their congregants to know what to do to avert the crashes.

However, he revealed that the region has as of August ending recorded over 3,000 road crashes with 214 death which is alarming.

One Rev. Isaac Oppong, founder and leader of the Healing Mountain of God ministry led a group of pastors to pray on the road to help avert road crashes especially at Asuboi, teacher Mante, Kyekyewere, e.tc.
