Ghana Statistical Service Conducts Trial Census In Fanteakwa South District, All You Need to Know

The Ghana Statistical Service in April/May 2021 will conduct a population & Housing Census. In view of this, there is the need to conduct a trial Census to aid preparations and Fanteakwa South has been selected for this trial census exercise.

*Why is it Necessary to conduct the census?*

👉 It provides an updated statistical data for planning, budgeting and effective policy decision making to ensure national development.

👉 It will provide information at locality, district, regional and national levels.

👉 The information would also be useful for business, media, academia, research institutions and international organisations as the basis for informed decision-making for better outcomes.

*Does the census have a legal backing?*

Yes! Statistical Service Act 2019 (Act 1003) compels everyone in Ghana to provide information to the census officials.

*What is the Significance of Census Night for the 2021 Trial Census?*

👉For Ghana 2021 Trial Census, this period is the midnight of 17th January 2021. For purposes of counting that night is referred to as Census Night.

👉 All counting would be referenced to the night.

👉The Census Night will be marked with activities in many communities. They include; Brass band and Spinning, Tolling of Church Bells, Azan from Mosques, Traditional Drumming, Cultural and Film shows, Lighting of Bon Fires.

*Who will be counted in this Trial Census?*

👉All persons (Ghanaians and Non-Ghanaians) who spend Census Night in households in Fanteakwa south district.

👉All persons who spend the census night in institutions (Hospitals, Colleges, Hotels, Barracks, Prisons etc) in Fanteakwa south district.

👉All floating persons (i.e. outdoor sleepers and those in transit) all over Fanteakwa South District.

👉 For about two weeks following the trial Census night, Census officials will visit each home in Fanteakwa South District to interview the heads of the households or any responsible adult member (man or woman) of the household.

👉When there is no one available to be interviewed, call-back card with the contact details will be left behind to enable the household schedule a new date and time with the census official.

*Will the 2021 Census count Non-Ghanaians living in the district?*

*Yes!* Non-Ghanaians living in Fanteakwa South District will all be counted irrespective of their nationality.

*What does this imply to Ghanaians not living in Ghana?*

Ghanaians living outside the district will not be counted but information on them will be collected from their relations. However, they will be counted if they find themselves in Fanteakwa South on or before the census night.

What is listing of structures & households in Census?

 2 weeks before the trial Census night will identify and write numbers on all houses and other structures in Fanteakwa South District. They will also ask of the use of the structures.

*What is expected of the public?*

👉Cooperate with the Census officials and provide accurate information to assist the census official to complete the work on time.

👉Information to be provided on household members as well as those who spent the census night in your household will include; i. Socio-demographic characteristics ii. Literacy and Education iii. Economic Activity iv. Difficulty in performing activity v. Internal migration vi.Emigration vii. ICT viii. Maternal and Paternal orphanhood. ix. Fertility x. Mortality. Xi. Ownership of household assets xii. Housing conditions Xiii. Sanitation.
