Galamsey Effect: Shortage Of Potable Water Hits Kyebi As Kyebi Water Treatment Plant Is Shut Down

Residents and indegenes of Kyebi, in the Abuakwa south municipality in the eastern region, the home of the president, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the traditional home for Akyem Abuakwa traditional council headed by Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin II are now battling with with access to potable water in the community.

This is as a result of the shutdown of the Kyebi Water Treatment Plant which produces and treats good drinking water to the residents of Kyebi about a week ago.

Sources within Ghana Water Company Limited in the region have revealed that the company takes it’s source of water from the Birim River at Afiasa in the same municipality but illegal mining activities under the guise of community mining has polluted the Almighty Birim river that the company can no longer treat it.

However, the source added that the cost of production would be too expensive even if they are to treat the ‘silt’.

It was also revealed that their equipments would also be at risk if they are to process this damaged water.

Again, sources within the regional water resource center also revealed that they are in the state of engagement with Kibi Divisional Police Command to clamp down on these illegal miners in Afiasa.

Residents therefore appealed that Afiasa is a traditional town and very close to Kyebi and therefore called on all stakeholders including the president of Ghana and the Okyenhene to act as soon as possible to clear the mess to as to have access to potable water.
