IMCIM was useless; give miners absolute power – Environmentalist

Environmentalist Hon. Okyere Boateng has said in an interview that the Inter-ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) was useless.

According to Hon. Okyere Boateng, a lot of people took advantage of IMCIM and abuse the power given to them.

President Akufo-Addo has dissolved the Inter-ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).

Sources with knowledge of the development say the President will hold a national dialogue with all stakeholders in illegal mining.

It comes after the President called for a ‘conversation’ on galamsey in his last state of the nation address for his first term.

However, Hon. Okyere Boateng said “The idea of IMCIM was good but the people involve made it useless by abusing the power given to them. Some became rich by extorting money from the miner and allow them to engage in illegal mining.”

“The government should give that power to the mining association that will allow them to do a proper check on themselves and provide good results. That is the only way the government will get the results it wants,” he added on Radio 1’s ‘Our Land Our Future Program.
