National Coordinator For Friends Of Bawumia Defends Emoluments For First And Second Ladies

While there have been controversies and mixed reactions on the proposed emoluments for first and second ladies of Ghana, the national coordinator for Friends of Bawumia who doubles as the NADMO Director for Fanteakwa North district in the eastern region, Rev Opoku Acheampong wades into the controversies.

Contrary to the numerous objections from the Ghanaian populace, Rev. Opoku Acheampong who also seeks the mandate to become the next eastern regional organizer for the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP is of the view that the emolument committee’ s recommendations are good and in the right direction.

In a studio discussion with Nana Kwabena Addo on Radio 1 100. 7fm’ s morning show, Rev Opoku Acheampong vehemently defended the proposal and said it’ s a step to help maintain the reputations of first and second ladies in Ghana after their tenure expire.

” During the era of former president John Agyekum Kuffour, he realized the living condition of wives of former heads of state was very bad. So through his infinite wisdom and love for humanity, he initiated a decision to resource wives of the former heads of state. So President Akufo- Addo also realizes the nation is not in the known of the allowances given them, hence the decision to make it official by giving them salaries. It is good in the right direction” – Rev Opoku Acheampong said.

He recounted a day he met the wife of a former head of state in Accra which really calls for his endorsement of the proposed emolument for first and second ladies in Ghana.

A five- member emolument committee under the chairmanship of Prof. Ntiamoa- Baidu was set up in June 2019 by President Akufo- Addo to make recommendations to him and to Parliament on the salaries and allowances payable, and the facilities and privileges available to article 71 officeholders.

Members of the committee included former Majority Leader and former Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Abraham Ossei Aidooh, the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Dr Edward Kwapong, the current Director- General of the Internal Audit Agency, Dr Eric Oduro Osae, and a former Managing Director, Donewell Life Insurance Co. Ltd, Mrs Stella Segbawu.

The committee recommended that first and second ladies be paid GHS21, 000. 00 monthly.
