The president of the republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned the much awaited biggest interchange ever at Pokuase in the nation’s capital.
The total cost of the project from its initial construction was to be at $94 million. It was supposed to be split between the government of Ghana, and the African Development Bank. The AfDB gave a total of $83 million, while the Ghana government took care of the remaining $11 million.
While many citizens are jubilating and praising the president for the unprecedented feat, the eastern regional secretary for the opposition National Democratic Congress, NDC, Kujo Adukpo has revealed that the interchange is an achievement of NDC.
According to him, the erstwhile NDC administration led by Mr John Dramani Mahama successfully secured loan to construct the Pokuase interchange and argues that he who provides the money for the construction obviously becomes the owner of that which is built.

In a phone interview on Radio 1 morning show, Kujo Adukpo told the host Nana Kwabena Addo that Pokuase interchange must be in the history books as an achievement of former president Mahama.
“Government is continues and no government uses its pocket money for development. If I build a house and my son comes to renovate, will my name get missing? Former President Mahama secured loan for this interchange and Nana Addo came to continue so credit must be given to Mahama. It has happened before when late Prof Mills credited former president J. A. Kuffour for the N1 highway. So John Mahama must be credited for the pokuase interchange” – Kujo Adukpo
This is the largest interchange in West Africa and it is expected to improve mobility on the Accra-Nsawam section of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, and to reduce the incidence of road crashes at ACP Junction, and enhance sustainable economic growth for the people in the area, as well as facilitate traffic between the Tema-Ouagadougou-Bamako corridors.
In July 2018, the government, under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, cut the sod for the commencement of work on the interchange.
The construction which was expected to be completed in 2020 was to include about 5 flyovers linking all major roads, and also see the construction of a 10-kilometer length of the roads network.
The Pokuase Interchange is a four-tier interchange situated at Pokuase Junction. It is the largest interchange in West Africa upon its completion. The interchange was originally a three-tier but was modified on the advice of the constructor by the new government to a four-tier thereby making it the largest in West Africa. Construction began in 2018 and has been commissioned for use today, 9 July 2021 by the current president of Ghana,H.E. Nana Akuffo Addo.
