A report by The Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) indicates that a total of 8 million tonnes of plastic waste leak into the ocean each year. By 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean if we do not take urgent, collective action.

Ghana generates approximately 1.1 million tonnes of plastic waste per year and approximately 5% of that is collected for recycling.

However, Mr. Okyere Boateng in an interview on “Our Land Our Future” program on Radio1 said it will be difficult for Ghana to fight plastic waste with our current mindset.

“Fighting plastic waste with this dead mind will be difficult, no one cares even if there are polluting the environment with plastic waste the individual mind to protect the environment is dead,” he stated.

“To put up a good fight against plastic waste we need to reinforce laws that will scare the ordinary not to pollute the environment with plastic waste,”

Mr. Okyere Boateng then advised that with July being Plastic-free July let all limited the use of plastic to save the environment.

Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and beautiful communities.
