Ohenewaa Human Rights Advocacy headed by Lawyer Mary Ohenewaa Afful, has collaborated with the Ga West Municipal Education Directorate and Nsawam.
Adoakyiri District Education Directorate to educate school children on Domestic and Sexual Violence Laws. It’s an 18 day programme which commenced on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 and it will come to an end on Friday October 29, 2021, with an overall students population of 52,688.
Focus is on prevention of crime by creating awareness of the various types of violence, educating the school children on the criminal offences and their jail terms and letting them know the jail terms associated with these acts of violence to prevent these children from committing acts of criminality and getting themselves into prison.
This Programme is meant to protect school children who are likely to become victims of crime or future offenders. According to the data from domestic violence and support unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service over the years, shows that more females continue to suffer from rape and defilement and the figure keeps going higher and higher. Furthermore, records from our court systems and our prisons also show a high rate of criminal offenders from ages 19 to 26 who ends up being jailed for committing various criminal offences. Thus, by teaching these school children at that basic level will be an easy way to educate them on specific areas of the law that pertains to our day to day lives and at that first stage as a primary prevention and also as a major step in preventive crime. We need to send a STRONG SIGNAL out there of helping fight against ALL FORMS OF ABUSE.
