The Deputy Minister for Education in charge of TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training), Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North constituency in the eastern region has revealed that there is an ongoing negotiations in parliament to decide on the current trainee allowances and the proposed guarantor free students loan.

According to the experienced legislator, concerns have been raised as to why same students acquiring same certificates have different options in accessing funds.

Speaking on Radio 1, a reputable media establishment in the eastern region, Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo added that there have been deliberations on the said matter in parliament and legislators are yet to make a decision whether to review it or not.

“Students from UDS, Winneba, UCC and those at College of Education graduate with B.Ed. certificate. So what people are asking is that students from UDS, UCC and Winneba have access to loans but those at the College of Education have access to allowances. This is the public concern.”

She further made it known that her statement does not mean government is canceling the trainee allowance but is considering equity in funding degree programs.

“That does not mean Government is cancelling the allowance but a consensus decision would be made soon. If it is agreed that all are to take loan or replace the allowance with loans, so be it. But as it stands now, all College of Educations are taking allowances” – Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo explained.

The deputy minister further said, even if all are to take loans, the poor and the rich will all have access to the ‘no guarantor’ students loan.
