Charcoal is a lightweight black carbon residue produced by strongly heating wood in minimal oxygen to remove all water and volatile constituents.

There are better sources of energy for cooking other than wood charcoal which has been affecting our forest due to the use of woods in making of this said by Ransford, Conservation and Research Development officer of A’Rocha Ghana .

On March 3, 2022, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), saw a 5% upward adjustment.

Due to high gas prices, Ghanaians are turning back to our traditional way of cooking i.e. the use of wood charcoal which will adversely affect our forest in both long and short terms.

Mr Ransford, speaking on a program named ,Our Land, Our Future on Radio 1 suggested four materials that could be use to produce charcoal aside wood which is widely known.
The following are what he enumerated;
1.Corn Cob
2.Biogas

  1. sugar cane
  2. Coconut 🥥 Husk

He added that, A’Rocha Ghana is ready to support any individual, group or organisation with the intent to produce charcoal without using wood since producing of charcoal from the above raw materials need to go through a process and would need some skills and knowledge.

He therefore urged Government and Private Banks to give soft loans to people who are ready to participate in charcoal business and also provide them with the necessary requirements.

Background;
The new development was due to the restoration of the Price Stabilisation and Recovery Levy (PSRL) on fuel products.
The restored PSRL was ¢0.16 pesewas per litre on petrol, ¢0.14 per litre on diesel, and ¢0.14 per kilogram on LPG. In the first window of February 2022, the price went up to ¢8.60 and went up again in the second window to ¢9.29. Currently, the price stands at ¢9.76. translating to about ¢140 for a 14.5 kg cylinder.
