“Parliament does not have the expertise, time and capacity to do that. It is not the duty of parliament though we have power to refer some issues to committees, in this case it’s not the right thing.” – Hon. Kofi Okyere Agyekum

The member of parliament for fanteakwa south constituency in the eastern region who doubles as the ranking member for Public Accounts Committee in parliament, Hon. Kofi Okyere Agyekum also known as Hon. Arafat has waded into the minority’s call for a bi-partisan adhoc committee to probe Covid-19 expenditure after the finance minister submitted his report at the floor of parliament.

According to the experienced lawmaker, the framers of Ghana’s constitution in their infinite wisdom set up responsibilities for departments and agencies and the Audit service have been given the oversight responsibility to look into such cases.

In a phone interview with Obido on Radio 1 100.7fm and monitored by Real Global news, Hon. Kofi Okyere Agyekum revealed that the Finance Minister, Hon. Ken Ofori Atta did what he needed to do and has justified his capabilities.

“It’s unfortunate but let me tell you that the speaker goofed. No one expected the minority to praise the finance minister but they are allowing propaganda to take more of them. Anyone who says the expenditure of every department must be looked into by parliament is wrong. That is why we have Audit service. They are trained for that.” – Hon. Arafat

He added that it would only be a waste of time and resources to constitute a parliamentary committee to look into it and describe the call as a populace propaganda.

The minority in parliament called for a committee from parliament to further probe the Covid-19 expenditure and the speaker of parliament Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin endorsed it even when the majority vehemently kicked against it.
