The National Chairman of NDC, Dr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo who seeks to maintain his position in the upcoming internal election, has waded into the electoral commission’s intentions to compile a new voters register ahead of the 2024 general election.

The experienced leader and communicator during a press conference expressed his position in his capacity as NDC chairman and on behalf of the party.

He revealed that the main aim of the said registration is to fulfill the promises of the NPP and appointing authorities.

He used the occasion to interprate the laws governing the Constitutional Instruments (C.I.) of EC in their draft.

“It is strongly felt that if the EC is indeed sincere in its intension to conduct a continuous registration exercise, it should rather come with an amendment to the existing C.I. for that purpose instead of introducing a completely new C.I. This will remove any lingering doubt that the EC intends to jettison the existing voters register in the near future. Claims by the EC that the C.I. is for only continuous registration is not only misleading but mischievous.” – Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said.

He explained further that regulation 33 in the draft C.I. seeks to revoke C.I. 91 and C.I. 126 therefore by operation of law, once the C.I. is passed it would be the only law on voter registration in Ghana.

He added that the EC knows that it does not have separate laws for continuous registration, limited registration or mass registration.

Dr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo who seemed to have lost trust in the current leadership of the electoral commission believes Mrs Jean Mensah and her deputy, Bossman Asare are doing the bidding of the president and leader of NPP to the disadvantage of the large masses of Ghanaians.

Underpinned by a national constitution, Ghana has nurtured a vibrant democracy to build a nation governed by the rule of law since 1992.

In this period, 8 elections have been held with varying degrees of credibility. Despite the imperfections associated with the various processes leading up to these elections, efforts are periodically made to improve upon the system through a participatory approach where all relevant stakeholders make one contribution or the other. However, Chairman Ofosu Ampofo is convinced that the current leadership of EC is not building consensus among the relevant stakeholders.

“Since the coming into office by the Akufo-Addo – Bawumia government, however, things have taken a dark turn and the time tested use of consensus building and dialogue as tools for the management of Ghana electoral process has been supplanted by overt partisanship and impunity by the current leadership of the electoral commission.” – He maintained.

Chairman Ofosu Ampofo vehemently stated without mincing words that the previous leadership of EC was unconstitutionally removed and replaced by NPP surrogates to bid the interest of NPP and the appointing authorities.

He reiterated that the EC wants to compile a needless voters register only because Prez Akufo-Addo and NPP wanted it.
