On the occasion of World Day for Decent Work which is being observed today, Friday, 7th October , the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union-Ghana (ICU-Ghana) has urged government through the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to ensure fairness and equality in the employment structure in the country.

Decent Work is work that ensures equal pay for equal work and also ensures future financial and job security of workers, according to labour organizations.

This is contained in a statement issued by the ICU-Ghana and signed by its General Secretary, Mr Morgan Ayawine.

ICU-Ghana noted with concern that many jobs in the country are casual and on contract basis due to unemployment in the country thus denying such workers financial and job security.

ICU-Ghana said it is ready to collaborate with relevant state authorities to name, shame and sanction exploitative employers to sanitize the employment system in the interest of the public.

ICU-Ghana also called on Labour organizations, the Ghana Employers Association and Labour Authorities to join hands with ICU-Ghana to end casual and contract work beyond the job period of 6 months allowed by the Labour laws of Ghana.

ICU-Ghana added that it will not hesitate to mobilize and collaborate with labour organizations to resist attempt by some employers to frustrate efforts towards promotion of decent work in Ghana.
