Five Injured, One in Critical Condition As Bibiani Zongo Residents Clash With Asante Gold Security

Five persons have been injured in a clash that broke between the military guards who are on official duty at Asante Gold Corporation in Bibiani, in the Bibiani- Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

However, the cause of the clash is unclear according to UTV’s Western North regional correspondent, Kwabena Dickson.

The Assemblyman for Bibiani Zongo electoral area, Abdellah Adams Mohammed who spoke with the media explained that they heard one of the Zongo residents had been shot so as an assembly member, he decided to enquire exactly what is happening but upon an attempt to get information from the leadership of the military guards, they subjected him to severe beating.

Speaking with the Assemblyman of the area, he also stated that some residents of Bibiani went to the Asante Gold Corporation premises to pick up some materials termed as “black” but they were ordered by the military to return them.

The residents however refused to oblige, resulting in the clash.

The military guards who are on official duty however traced their residences and a misunderstanding erupted between the residents and the military guards.

The Assemblyman for the area, Abdullah Adams Mohammed explained to the media that one of the victims is in critical condition as he was suffering from a gun wound.

He also said the five victims are all responding to treatment at the Bibiani Government Hospital in the Western North Region.

He further said police from the regional headquarters have intervened to salvage the security intensity in Bibiani Zongo.

Meanwhile, three persons of the clash victims have been discharged.

Asante Gold Corporation Bibiani has started it’s plans to resettle residents of Bibiani Zongo and Old town to Asikyire Nkwanta, a small farming community near Bibiani.

The Western North Regional Minister, Mr Richard Ebbah Obeng visited the resettlement site at Asikyire Nkwanta to meet farmers who own the land and other stakeholders for the smooth implementation of the process, but few days after his visit to the sites this unfurtunate incident has come up leaving many injured. .
