The School Feeding Program started in 2005 and seeks to enhance food security and reduce hunger in schools in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on hunger, poverty and malnutrition.

The programme has however been facing challenges as caterers have threatened to withdraw their services if the feeding fee is not increased. They insist that the current 97 pesewas is not enough.

Subsequently, the aggrieved caterers on Wednesday, declared a nationwide strike.

They explained that the declaration of the nationwide strike was due to the government’s failure to pay them their arrears and increase the amount per child.

Reacting to this on Thursday’s edition of Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’, host Kwami Sefa Kayi said: “It’s getting embarrassing . . . if we can’t pay 97 pesewas how much more ghc3.50p? Should we just scrap it? Here we are struggling with it; I don’t know if it is leadership, I don’t know”.

Meanwhile, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah, a Governance Lecturer at Central University has asked government to scrap the programme if it can no longer fund it.
