The exit of Alan Kyerematen from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should worry the party, according to political scientist Dr. Etse Sikanku.

He explained that Mr. Kyerematen’s choice to run for president in 2024 as an independent candidate may have some effects on the NPP’s fortunes.

The former Minister of Trade and Industry withdrew from the NPP’s presidential primaries in November, citing alleged irregularities during the party’s super delegates meeting, and then announced his resignation from the NPP to run as an independent in the 2024 presidential elections.

Dr. Sikanku said, in an interview with Citi News, “We are not suggesting that he is taking everyone from the NPP along with him, but of course, he has some followers who definitely followed him and were at the event launch on Monday, as well as those who are still with him and others who might continue to support him… The question now is, “Will this have an impact on the NPP?”

Veteran writer Paul Adom-Otchere has forecast that when the 2024 election campaign season heats up, voters will forget about Mr. Kyerematen.

According to Adom-Otchere, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will engage in a vigorous contest for the NPP’s nomination if Bawumia wins.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mr Adom-Otchere said, “I can tell you that by the time the campaign hits a crescendo, if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia becomes the NPP’s candidate, with the kind of campaigning he does, which he’s going to do, when the campaign reaches a crescendo, and it’s John Dramani Mahama versus Dr. Bawumia, people will even forget that Alan Kyerematen is contesting.

“This election is likely to be tough and viciously fought. Additionally, no one will recall that a third candidate was present. That much I can guarantee you, but we still need to wait and see how Alan’s campaign turns out.
