Nana Akomea, a prominent supporter of Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership, begged “not to be beaten” after his co-panelist on live television barraged him with information about his principal’s shoddy financial history.

On September 15, Akomea refuted accusations that Bawumia had failed to manage the economy when speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana program. He did this by pointing out that the Economic Management Team (EMT) he supervises is accountable to cabinet and ultimately the president.

“The cabinet is where the Economic Management Team (EMT) reports. They lack the authority to take any action. Even the Constitution does not mention it. Article 60 (1) formally designates him as the Vice President.

“So, this business about he is in charge of the economy and has failed won’t wash,” he asserted in response to North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s criticism of Bawumia as a Vice President and flagbearer candidate. Ablakwa presented passages from the Constitution that demonstrated that Bawumia could be given positions by the president, and that in this case he was in control of the EMT, following a debate about the true nature of the EMT and why Bawumia had to bear the brunt of its shortcomings.

“He praised the strong EMT on the biggest stage they offered him as Vice President, but why didn’t he praise the cabinet… He was discussing competent EMT. You’re now running and telling us to get to the cabinet.

“The Constitution does not mention it. I’ll get ready. According to Article 60 (1), “There shall be a Vice President of Ghana, who shall perform such functions as may be assigned to him by this Constitution or by the President.”

“And he has been assigned a duty as the Chairman of the Economic Management Team by the president. He stood on a platform and touted the EMT, he didn’t list cabinet… and ended up saying, “what a solid team, it was EMT…” Ablakwa charged. After barraging Akomea with information, the former lawmaker said, “don’t come and beat me,” which made the two guests as well as the show’s presenter Randy Abbey laugh.
