Following Ghana’s victory over the Central African Republic on Thursday, former president John Dramani Mahama congratulated the team online. He was overjoyed that Ghana had qualified for the AFCON tournament in 2019.
With a nerve-wracking comeback victory over CAR at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the Black Stars guaranteed their spot at the AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.
“We are proud of our Black Stars. Fantastic comeback after falling behind by one goal and a stunning victory over CAR secured a spot in the 2024 AFCON. You’ve restored Ghana’s pride!,” the post read.
The team was urged by the former president to aspire for victory in the competition, which Ghana hasn’t won in more over 40 years.

“Keep shining! Let’s go for gold in the AFCON!,” he added.
After Louis Mafouta had given CAR the lead, goals from Mohammed Kudus and Ernest Nuamah helped the Black Stars pull out a tense victory.
The outcome guarantees Ghana’s place at the AFCON, where they will try to win their fifth continental championship.
On X (previously Twitter), Mahama congratulated the squad on their triumph and commended them for overcoming their deficit to win in Kumasi.
