Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang should not be the former president John Dramani Mahama’s running mate for the 2024 elections, according to historian and attorney Anokye Frimpong.
He asserts that Mahama, the presidential candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), cannot run with Prof. Opoku-Agyemang in the 2024 elections because it is party custom to replace the running mate if the party does not succeed in winning elections.
Anokye Frimpong said that Mahama had to alter his running mate because Ashantis, who he needed to win the 2024 election, would not support her in an interview on Kumasi-based Otec FM on September 13, 2023.
“The NDC tradition demonstrates that they must switch running mates before they are able to win an election. Arkaah was replaced by Rawlings as his running mate, Alhaji Muhammad Mumuni was initially replaced by Mills, and Martin Amidu was later replaced by Mahama before Rawlings was elected president.

The NDC has a tradition that requires you to be removed so that someone else can be tried if you are unable to assist the candidate in winning the presidential elections. Now that Prof. Naana Jane has lost, you have someone with the Ashanti spirit. Pushing that person is necessary.
The lawyer added, “Ashanti would vote for the NDC provided they make Julius Debrah the running mate because traditional Ashantis and Fantis don’t like each other. If they retain the woman (Prof. Naana Jane), Ashantis would not vote for the NDC.”
