Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the protest’s organizer, has defended the choice in reaction to criticism surrounding the absence of a petition during the three-day #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration. He claims that their ideas were committed to paper but were kept out of fear that it could be ignored.

Alhassan Tampuli Sulemana, a member of parliament for Gushegu and the deputy minister of transportation, expressed disappointment that the protesters had not voiced any issues during the demonstrations despite the fact that he had been chosen by the government to receive their petition from the Democracy Hub group.

In a tweet, Barker-Vormawor stated, “We have written down our thoughts to share with the nation. One of the things that we don’t do is to hand over paper petitions to anybody. They use the petitions for toilet roll.”

A perceived lack of attention from government representatives appears to be the driving force for the decision not to present the petition.

They called us and said they were sending a minister to come and take a petition, continued Barker-Vormawor. We objected. The Ghanaian people will hear from us; the president and ministers are no longer worthy of our attention.

He added, “It is the people of Ghana we must address… We are taking back our democracy; we are taking back our country.”
