The phrase “to give a showdown” is frequently associated with Kennedy Agyapong, the member of parliament for Assin Central, in the country’s contemporary political discourse.
The MP has made this phrase his political anthem even though it was born out of a difficult moment at the New Patriotic Party’s most recent Super Delegates Conference before its Delegates Congress on November 4 to nominate a flagbearer.
However, he is not the only person to have used such coinage recently. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president of Ghana, is another noteworthy user.
This is noteworthy because Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the president in office at the time, and Bawumia, his vice president, were the targets of Kennedy Agyapong’s initial usage of the term.

The MP was overheard on the phone, yelling threats at whoever was on the other end of his conversation, furious over an incident involving the suspected improper handling of one of his agents.
“President Akufo-Addo, I swear God, I will give you a showdown. Vice president, I will give you a showdown. You’ve chased away my agent for him to hide in a room, we shall see. You will hear what will happen. I swear God, I will challenge President Akufo-Addo anytime,” he was heard saying.
The supposed mismanaged agent was not one of his, but rather that of another contender, Alan Kyerematen, therefore the issue he was furious over had been miscommunicated, it found out.
However, in a recent video that has surfaced online, Kennedy Agyapong, who had pledged to give Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia a “showdown,” is heard in jest using the same coinage in an address.
The vice president used the word “showdown” while referring to his husky voice at what looks to be an event with the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, which caused a brief reaction in the audience.“Even though my voice decided to give me a showdown this morning, I say that the devil is a liar. God bless our homeland Ghana and make her great and strong,” he said in what is supposed to be his closing remarks at the event.
fter former Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen withdrew from the candidacy, four candidates will run for the delegates convention on November 4, 2023.
In addition to Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, the other four candidates are Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Ashanti Mampong MP, and Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture.
