Due to recent developments in Libya, former American president Donald John Trump’s post from 2011 has gained popularity on Twitter (now called X).

The tweet from August 23, 2011, discussed the political developments that resulted in Muammar Gaddafi’s regime being overthrown.

Despite believing that Gaddafi needed to be eliminated, Trump predicted that the situation in Libya would deteriorate. His tweet read: “As bad as Qaddafi was—what comes next in Libya will be worse—just watch.”

The majority of those who have commented on the 12-year-old tweet concur with Trump’s prophecy while defending Gaddafi.

Libyan leader Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi ruled the country from 1969 until his death in 2011 at the hands of rebels.

In reaction to developments during the 2011 Libyan civil war, a multi-state coalition led by NATO and supporting the rebels started a military intervention in Libya to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973. President of the United States at the time Barack Obama said that the invasion was a mistake. Obama has drawn criticism for sharing a fundraiser for Libya in the wake of the disastrous and fatal Derna floods.
