Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah has slammed the leadership of the New Patriotic Party over the resignation of Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has voluntarily stepped down for a new leadership of the Caucus to be put in place.

The Suame lawmaker and current Majority leader’s resignation came after a crunch meeting between the leadership of the party and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Majority held a press conference a couple of days ago to refute claims that the New Patriotic Party was about to change the leadership, and as a result, the Member of Parliament for Effutu and Deputy Majority Leader, Alex Afenyo-Markin, was going to take over from Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

But the majority, led by the First Deputy Speaker and Bekwai MP, Joseph Osei Owusu, asserted that “the Majority Caucus has not made any changes in its leadership, the majority caucus has not contemplated making any changes to its leadership, and we will tell the world and Ghana to ignore any such publication.”

He added, “We want to assure you that we have confidence in the leadership and the status quo shall remain, we are aware that upon the nomination of one of the Deputy Whips as a minister, a replacement will be made, that replacement will be made by the caucus when we have the opportunity and the time to consider the appropriate replacement, this is all the information we have to share.”

However, it is established that Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s resignation is to ensure a smooth transition and therefore make the path clear for Alex Afenyo-Markin’s ascent to the Majority Leader position.

Addressing the issue during Peace FM’s Thursday edition of “Kokrokoo” show, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah remonstrated against what he described as ill treatment from the New Patriotic Party to Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

To him, the Majority Leader was bullied by his party to vacate his position.

“Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was pushed out,”  he exclaimed, further arguing that this decision was taken by a force from within the party to get rid of him.

“Have a seat and find somewhere to sit, there’s a difference,”  he proverbially remarked as he explained what actually happened to Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

“That decision wasn’t made at the party headquarters but rather inside the Jubilee House. What is wrong is wrong! We have to say  it,” he fumed.

The governance lecturer at the Central University, expressing deep resentments over the party’s move, pointed out to the party what they will be missing from the decision they have made.

“Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is an asset not to NPP alone; he is a national asset.”
