Some supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Yendi constituency in the northern Region have called on the party’s National Executive Committee(NEC) to re-run the Yendi parliamentary election to minimize division among its members.
According to them, the Electoral Commission did not declare any candidate as the winner in the last primaries.
The Yendi primary contested by the incumbent Yendi MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah held on Saturday, January 29, 2024 was marred by a chaotic scene that disrupted the counting process.
This was after an official of the Electoral Commission (EC) allegedly attempted to pocket some of her ballots.
The Party Youth led by Alhaji Mohammed Kpemsi have therefore given strong indications that if the party imposes any candidate on them, they will sponsor an independent candidate in the Yendi constituency.

”We want to send this warning, a very strong message to the National Chairman of the party and the leadership of NEC, should they make any mistaketo impose the candidate for Yendi constituency, the party will regret it. If the three-member committee fail to adhere to what we have said we will fly an independent candidate. We have every evidence that the candidate they are looking at cannot rescue the seat.
”We love the party to the extent that the seat cannot be allowed to go into the hands of the NDC. Knowing that sending these candidates to election 2024, the NPP will lose the seat and that’s what we want to prevent. It is strange and suspicious that NEC will overlook such infractions and ignore steps taken by the EC. The best and most appropriate decision of NEC is to call for another election but not to settle on any of the two aspirants. NEC has the power to choose whoever it wants to be the parliamentary candidate in any constituency but not when there’s a dispute among the parties.”
