Former Special Assistant to former President Jerry John Rawlings, Dr Donald Agumenu, has praised the selection of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate of former President John Mahama for the 2024 presidential elections.

According to the leadership and governance expert, the choice reinforces Mahama’s commitment to the ideals of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and demonstrates his belief in inclusion and women empowerment.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was named on Thursday, as the NDC looks to regain power in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

This move marks a repeat of the party’s strategy in the 2020 elections, when the duo led the NDC to an improved performance, despite ultimately losing the election.

The party hopes that the pair’s experience and chemistry will help them succeed in their bid to return to power in 2024.

“President John Mahama has reinforced his commitment to the ideals of the NDC as a party that believes in inclusion and women empowerment as critical catalysts to achieving the Ghana we want,” Dr. Agumenu said.

He added that the choice of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is a “true testament” to Mahama’s leadership commitment to achieving his strategic visions, projects, and programs towards sustainable socio-economic development.

“Women played cardinal roles in our developmental trajectory as a people and the choice of Prof Nana Jane Opuku Agyeman is a true testament to his leadership commitment to achieving his strategic visions, projects and programmes towards sustainable socio-economic development.”

Dr Agumenu further stated that the choice resonates with Ghanaian socio-cultural values and urged all Ghanaians to support the NDC’s vision for the country.

“This decisive choice is not only prudent but reassuring the rank and file within the women’s fraternity and the nation at large, that Ghana after 67 years of independence is capable of deepening and changing the democratic strata for effective leadership and governance of its affairs.”

He expressed gratitude to the flagbearer of the NDC for recognizing the importance of women in Ghana’s development and for demonstrating his commitment to their empowerment.

“This step also shows that the Flagbearer of the NDC is deeply committed to the women of Ghana and cannot thank them better than this. Let’s all embrace this direction.”
