Mr. Achianor Tabi, the Coordinator for Concerned Citizens for Atiwa Landscape, recently addressed the pressing issue of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, in an interview on Radio1’s “Our Land Our Future,” program.
Speaking to the host Michael Agyapong Agyapa, Mr. Tabi talked about the severe consequences of galamsey and the urgent need for collective action to combat it.
During the conversation, Mr. Tabi gives the importance of keeping the fight against galamsey free from political influences.
He stated, “We should avoid the fight against galamsey being politicized, politicizing the issue only hinders progress and prevents effective solutions from being implemented. Instead, let us build a front where all stakeholders, regardless of political affiliation, work together to address the problem.”

Mr. Tabi highlighted the dire consequences of illegal mining activities on both the environment and public health. “In most mining communities, the babies born there have some deformities because of the chemicals used for mining, these chemicals contaminate the water and soil, leading to birth defects and other serious health issues among the local population,” he noted.
Beyond the health impacts, Mr. Tabi shed light on the environmental devastation caused by galamsey. The rampant destruction of forests and water bodies in the Atiwa region has far-reaching consequences for the ecosystem. Forests, which play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity, are being decimated. Water bodies, essential for both human consumption and agriculture, are being polluted, threatening the livelihoods of countless people.
