In a dramatic turn of events, farmers in Abuakwa South have made up to petition the government to grant Arocha Ghana the authority to apprehend illegal miners who have been devastating their water sources and agricultural lands.

The farmers, who have voiced their concerns on Radio1, expressed a deepening mistrust in the local police’s ability to effectively address the issue.

The farmers argue that the illegal mining activities have severely impacted their livelihoods, causing significant damage to vital water resources and fertile land necessary for their crops. They claim that previous attempts to involve the police have yielded little to no results, prompting them to seek alternative solutions to combat the escalating crisis.

“We have tried to work with the local police, but our concerns have been met with inaction,” said Kwame, a local farmer.

“The situation has worsened to the point where our water sources are polluted and our lands are being destroyed. We believe that Arocha Ghana, with its expertise and commitment to environmental preservation, is better equipped to handle this urgent matter,” another farmer said.

Arocha Ghana, an environmental organization known for its work in conservation and sustainable practices, has expressed willingness to assist but requires official authorization to operate in the area. The farmers’ petition highlights the urgent need for such authorization, emphasizing that the situation has reached a critical point.

“We are calling on the government to take swift action by allowing Arocha Ghana to step in and address the illegal mining activities,” said Afia Mensah, another farmer affected by the crisis. “Our communities are suffering, and we can no longer afford to wait for solutions that aren’t working.”

The farmers hope that by involving Arocha Ghana, they can secure a more effective response to the illegal mining threat and restore their lands and water sources to a sustainable condition.
