The former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress is urging the government to enforce anti-vigilantism laws to avert violence before and during the 2024 December polls.

Speaking to GHOne News after graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Public Administration, Governance, and Leadership, Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo said he believes enforcement of the law will deter troublemakers.

“It is something that my research has shown that vigilantism has a great effect on our democratic process and every effort must not be spared in ensuring that we work very hard to eradicate it if possible or minimize it to the bare minimum. Vigilantism undermines security and development because investors definitely won’t stay in a country where after a changeover, people take the laws into their own hands.

“I believe that the law that has been passed must be enforced, and political parties must be encouraged to play the game. The Electoral Commission is expected to ensure that, there is fairness and transparency in the process before, during, and after the elections,” the former NDC Chairman stated.

He stressed the need to maintain peace and order during the election period to ensure the credibility of the polls.

“The Security agencies are supposed to ensure that they create the environment that will enable people to exercise their franchise without any hindrance. If we can create an enabling environment that will engender confidence in the electoral process, I believe that we can fight the phenomenon of Vigilantism.

“Political parties and candidates should respect the democratic process and the will of the Ghanaians. Refrain from actions that would compromise the integrity of the elections”, he advised.

Dr. Ofosu Ampofo also appealed to citizens to vote for the largest opposition party, NDC to reset the economy.
