The Fanteakwa South District Assembly has broken ground to begin renovations at the Akyem-Osino market in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
Serving all the Mumuadu communities within the Fanteakwa South District and acting as the district capital’s main market, the Akyem-Osino market has long struggled with infrastructure issues. These challenges include a lack of proper facilities such as electricity, toilets, and a conducive trading environment.
In response, the district assembly took the initiative to address these problems by renovating the market. The assembly built new structures, provided toilet facilities, and installed mechanized water systems to improve conditions for market traders. However, these initial efforts fell short. The toilet facilities quickly became overwhelmed by the number of traders, leading to their closure, while the mechanized water system broke down, causing water shortages.
The current renovation project aims to resolve these issues. Plans include constructing a modern toilet facility, installing an overhead tank to ensure a reliable water supply for both the market and the washrooms, and paving the market floor to reduce dust during the dry Harmattan season and prevent mud accumulation during the rains. The project is expected to take two months and will begin in the coming weeks.
The event was attended by the chiefs of Akyem-Osino, market traders, and officials from the district assembly, including the District Chief Executive Officer of Fanteakwa South, Hon. Ofosu Ernest. Also present was the parliamentary candidate for the NPP in Fanteakwa South, Hon. Duke Ofori-Atta, along with party supporters and assembly members from Akyem-Osino.
