A group of Ghanaians in New York took to the streets outside the United Nations Headquarters on Wednesday to protest against the government’s handling of illegal mining, locally known as “galamsey,” and to demand the immediate release of anti-galamsey activists currently detained in Ghana.

The protesters, wielding placards and chanting slogans, urged President Akufo-Addo to take decisive action against illegal mining, which they claim is ravaging Ghana’s environment, particularly its water bodies, forests, and farmlands.

One of the key demands of the protest was the release of anti-galamsey activists, and environmental advocates, who were reportedly arrested during demonstrations against illegal mining activities in Ghana. The protesters expressed concern that the government’s crackdown on activists undermines freedom of speech and civic activism in the fight to protect Ghana’s environment.
