The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, engaged the people of Akroso as part of his campaign for the upcoming December elections. Addressing a large crowd, Mahama highlighted the failures of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and outlined his plans to address the challenges facing the country.
Speaking passionately, Mahama urged the electorate to vote wisely in the December polls. “On December 7, if you don’t cast a good vote, we’ll all bear the consequences,” he stated. “It is time to sack the elephant we mistakenly voted into power. They have disappointed us.”
He criticized the NPP’s governance for focusing solely on its flagship Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which he argued has been poorly managed. “Every country has vital sectors like health, education, agriculture, energy, and the economy. Campaigns should address how to develop these areas. But the NPP’s campaign always revolves around Free SHS,” he stated.
While acknowledging the policy as a good initiative, he lamented its execution. “Teachers, students, and parents are all struggling under this policy. There’s no accountability for Free SHS. When I come to power, we will ensure there’s an account for it, and a dedicated fund will be deposited annually to support the program,” Mahama assured. He also highlighted the growing unemployment rate, comparing the NDC’s record of 8.4% unemployment to the NPP’s 14.7%.

Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, a former National Chairman of the NDC, also addressed the gathering, urging the youth of the Eastern Region to reconsider their unconditional allegiance to the NPP.
“The youth in Akyem areas have been blindly supporting the NPP, saying even if a goat stands for president with the NPP flag, they’ll vote for it. Meanwhile, we are being left behind in development,” he remarked. He appealed for unity, stating, “Let’s come together and vote for a better Ghana. Under the NDC, we built Akroso Senior High School. If Mahama is voted into power again, Akroso will see development, and the youth will benefit from job opportunities through the 24-hour economy plan.”
Adding his voice to the calls for change, Nana Kwadwo Ofori, the Akrosohene, expressed his concerns about the current state of the economy and its impact on his people. “From 1992, the dollar was GHC 4.00, but now it’s GHC 17.00 due to poor governance,” he lamented.
He called on Mahama to return to power and assist the people of Akroso, who are struggling. “My people are talented in many fields, but there’s no park or facility to train them. I have land available, and if Mahama becomes president, I plead with him to help us with pitches for games,” Nana Kwadwo Ofori added.
