The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, has called on media houses in the region to uphold peace and prevent violence in their broadcasts, particularly in the lead-up to the December 7th elections.
During a meeting with media representatives at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council in Koforidua on Thursday, November 7, 2024, Hon. Acheampong emphasized the critical role the media plays in shaping the public’s behavior, especially in an election year. He urged all media platforms to ensure that they do not provide space for individuals whose rhetoric could incite violence.
“If someone comes to your platform and their attitude or character is promoting violence, the media must stop that person,” said Hon. Acheampong. “Let them know that we all need peace, because if this country descends into violence, it will affect everyone. When hosting programs, it is important to prevent individuals from using your platform to cause harm or unrest.”
The Minister also appealed to media houses to actively promote peaceful election campaigns, emphasizing that elections are about the democratic right to choose leaders, not about engaging in conflicts. “Election is about expressing your mind and choosing whom to vote for. It is not about fighting. Even if you disagree with someone, that should not lead to violence. Instead, we should encourage peaceful voting,” he said.

He concluded by calling on the media to continue their crucial role in promoting peace and ensuring a smooth post-election environment. “It is now more important than ever for the media to campaign for a peaceful election and support the promotion of peace, both before and after the election,” Hon. Acheampong urged.
The Minister’s comments come at a time when the country is gearing up for the general elections, with the hope that the media will take a leading role in fostering a peaceful and fair election process.
