After an incredible 23-year career, Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal has announced his retirement at the age of 38. Nadal played his final match yesterday at the 2024 Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain, where he lost to Botic van de Zandschulp.
Nadal’s journey in tennis began back in 2001 when he was just 14 years old. He played in the qualifying rounds of several tournaments but struggled to make it into the main draws. However, this early setback didn’t stop him.
In 2004, Nadal won his first professional title on the clay courts of Sopot, Poland. The following year, he made history by breaking into the world’s top 10, a position he held for an incredible 912 consecutive weeks—a record that still stands.
Over his career, Nadal won 91 ATP titles, including 22 Grand Slam trophies. He dominated the French Open, claiming victory 14 times, and won four US Opens, two Wimbledons, and two Australian Opens.

One of his greatest achievements came in 2010 when he won the US Open, completing the career Grand Slam and becoming the youngest man in the Open Era to achieve this milestone. With his Olympic gold medal from Beijing 2008, Nadal also secured a career Golden Slam, a rare feat shared by only four other players: Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Serena Williams, and Novak Djokovic.
However, one trophy always eluded Nadal—the ATP Finals. Despite competing in the season-ending tournament 11 times and reaching the final twice, he never managed to lift the trophy.
In total, Nadal played 1,307 professional matches, spending over 2,543 hours on court and winning 1,080 of them. His career has been a testament to hard work, resilience, and unmatched skill.
Rafael Nadal will forever be remembered as one of the greatest players in tennis history, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration for generations to come.
