Abigail Elorm Mensah, the Deputy National Women’s Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has shared her thoughts following the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as President-elect. Speaking on Radio 1’s morning show Oman Mu Nsem, Ms. Mensah discussed the party’s expectations and the factors that contributed to their victory.

According to her, entering elections always comes with optimism. She stated, “When it comes to elections, it is in the mind of everyone that they are going to win. To lose an election is not a dream for going into elections.”

Ms. Mensah also highlighted the requirements for winning elections in Ghana. She noted, “In Ghana before you can win an election, you need to get 50.1%. If you get that, then you are free to go as the winner of the election.”

Touching on the NDC’s mindset going into the 2024 elections, she expressed confidence in their chances of victory, given the current state of the nation. “As for us in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), it was in our mind that we were going into elections this year 2024 to win because, based on the nature of hardship in the system, the unemployment, and the economic challenges Ghanaians are going through, we knew that NDC would win,” she explained.

Ms. Mensah concluded by expressing surprise at the margin of the NDC’s victory. She stated, “We didn’t know that we were going to get such a huge gap. Though we knew we would win, the gap is very huge, and now we are having about 180 Parliamentary seats, which has not happened before since 1992.”
