The Canada Chapter Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gameli Atakuma, has likened the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) administration to a “horror movie,” suggesting that Ghanaians have been spared from further distress following the party’s defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
Atakuma’s remarks were in reference to the re-election of former President John Dramani Mahama, who emerged victorious in the polls. The Electoral Commission (EC) announced on Monday, December 9, that Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of valid ballots cast, defeating his main contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, who polled 4,657,304 votes, equivalent to 41.61%.
Speaking on Gold Morning Conversation with Sena Nombo on Wednesday, December 11, Atakuma described Mahama’s victory as a significant milestone for Ghana’s democracy.
“This is a victory not just for John Dramani Mahama but for Ghana’s democratic growth,” he stated. “Like I said before, and as His Excellency John Mahama put it, this has been a horror movie. The tape has finally run out, and the credits are rolling. We eagerly await the final scene when the credits are fully read.”

Atakuma expressed relief and optimism about the future, emphasizing that the country should never revisit the NPP era.
“We are going to take that disc, remove it, and burn it. That horror movie is over, and we will never watch it again. This is the state of Ghana today,” he remarked.
The re-election of Mahama has sparked varied reactions, with NDC members celebrating it as a turning point for the nation.
