The Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a 20% increase in lorry fares effective Monday (17 March 2025), in response to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of vehicle maintenance.
In a statement dated Thursday (13 March 2025) and signed by general secretary, George Baffour Owusu Afriyie, the association cited recent hikes in fuel prices, with costs rising from GHC12.99 per liter to GHC16.23, as a key reason for the fare adjustment.
Additionally, the prices of spare parts, vehicle engines, and engine oil have also surged, making it difficult for commercial drivers to sustain their operations.
Drivers struggling to make ends meet
The group emphasised that commercial drivers are self-employed and do not receive salaries from the government. They expressed frustration over returning home empty-handed despite long hours of work, making it increasingly challenging to support their families.

Call for understanding from passengers
The Alliance of Drivers Ghana is calling on both drivers and passengers to take note of the fare increment and understand the necessity of the decision.
They assured commuters that the adjustment is essential to keep transport services running efficiently amid economic challenges.
