Speaking at a Workshop at PGRRI Bunso, Senior Scientist at Crops Research Institute, Kumasi, Dr. Emmanuel Asamoah Adjei said Common Bean Can Be Our Next Cocoa in Ghana due its High Demand in Africa and across the work.
This workshop was held to introduce common Bean popularly known as Bake Beans to farmers in the eastern Region for the first and these farmers are from Atiwa East and West, Fantekwaa North and Abuakwa South districts.

Dr. Adjei continue by saying that after a terror Research and trial they realized that common bean can be cultivated in the eastern region due its humidity condition so there was the need to introduce it to the farmer first before demonstrating it on the field with the farmers since it’s a new seed.
He said aside the high demand of Common Bean (Bake Beans) it also has a short maturity period of 60 to 65 days and possess a lot of nutrient which good for human specially children.

“This common Bean can open job opportunity for the youth in farmer and reduce the importation of Bake Beans into the country so I urge all farmer to take a change in the cultivating of common bean” he concluded.
Common bean belongs to the legume family. It is widely cultivated and represents one of the largest food components in Africa valued for its high content of protein and micronutrients such as iron and folic acid. It is one of the most economically important crops. The common bean is mainly self-pollinated.

Common bean grows well at temperatures ranging from 15 to 27°C and will withstand temperatures up to 29.5°C. The ideal growing conditions are rainfall. rainfall during the growing season combined with low relative humidity to minimize risk of bacterial and fungal disease.
