Some commercial drivers at Bunsu Junction in the Eastern Region have expressed mixed reactions to the government’s recent announcement on reducing transport fares following a drop in fuel prices.

Speaking to Akua Acheampomaa Owoahene of Radio 1, drivers who operate from Bunsu to Accra, Koforidua, Kumasi, and Kyebi argued that while the reduction in fuel prices is a welcome move, it is not enough reason to cut down fares.

A driver who plies the Bunsu-Accra route said, “It’s true that fuel prices have come down slightly, but spare parts, road tolls, and other costs are still very high. If we reduce the fares, we won’t make any profit.”

Another driver heading to Kumasi added that the government should first consult stakeholders in the transport industry before making such pronouncements. “We are the ones on the ground. They should talk to us first. It’s not just about fuel,” he said.

The drivers appealed to the government to take into account the broader challenges they face before enforcing any fare reduction policy. They warned that any forced implementation could lead to disagreements between drivers and passengers.
