Former Senior Presidential Aide Dr. Tony Aidoo has warned the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to end illegal mining (galamsey) or risk losing public support in the next general elections.
He cautioned that failure to effectively address the issue could cost the party the 2028 elections.
Speaking on JoyNews on July 17, Dr. Aidoo stressed how seriously Ghanaians view environmental protection and accountability, drawing comparisons to the previous administration’s handling of the matter.
“Akufo-Addo didn’t care, so don’t say Ghanaians don’t care about your administration. If you don’t solve the galamsey problem, in 2028 Ghanaians will vote the NDC out,” Dr. Aidoo said, referencing the public’s frustration with earlier attempts to stop illegal mining.

His remarks highlight how strongly the galamsey issue resonates with Ghanaians and its potential to influence voting decisions.
Illegal mining has become a national crisis, damaging Ghana’s environment, economy, and public health.
Major rivers such as the Pra, Ankobra, and Birim have been polluted with mercury, cyanide, and other toxic substances, making the water unsafe for drinking and farming.
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has also reported rising costs and difficulties in treating water from these polluted sources due to high turbidity and contamination.
