In April 2025, the government launched a new program to improve food security across the country. This program is especially important now, as many people are struggling with high food prices.
During a recent Assembly meeting in New Juabeng South (Koforidua), the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Ransford Boakye, spoke about the goals of this new initiative. He said the government is working hard to make sure that there is enough food for everyone and that farming becomes more productive and sustainable.
Hon. Boakye explained that the program involves many key stakeholders, including farmers, herders, community leaders, and government officials. Together, they are focusing on several important areas to boost food production, supply.
Farm Inputs: Farmers will receive important tools and supplies such as seeds, fertilizers, and equipment to help them grow more food.Strengthening Institutions: Agricultural institutions will be improved so they can better support farmers and help increase their productivity.
Encouraging Peaceful Collaboration: The government is promoting dialogue and cooperation among farmers, herders, and communities to prevent conflicts and build peace in farming areas.
The program also includes,
Improving Crop Yields; Farmers will be trained in modern and smart farming methods to grow more food with fewer resources.
Financial Support;Farmers will get easier access to loans and other financial help to expand their work.
Boosting Agricultural Exports. The government is helping farmers turn their products into goods that can be sold in other countries.
Hon. Boakye also mentioned other helpful programs like,Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ).This program gives farmers better seeds, fertilizers, and market opportunities.
Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP);This initiative provides free meals to school children using food grown by local farmers, which also supports farming communities.
Climate-Smart Agriculture; This approach helps farmers deal with climate change and keep their farms productive for the future.
To make sure these efforts work well, Hon. Boakye said it’s important to keep monitoring progress, involve all stakeholders in decision-making, and make sure policies are properly carried out.
He ended by saying that if everyone works together, Ghana can achieve food security and build a stronger, more sustainable agricultural sector for future generations.
