Hon. Alhassan Yakubu Abanga, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has sharply criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he describes as a sudden and inconsistent stance against the Electoral Commission (EC) in the lead-up to the rerun of the Ablekuma North elections in 19 polling stations.
According to Hon. Abanga, the NPP has consistently defended the Electoral Commission and its Chairperson, whom they supported following her appointment by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He expressed surprise at the party’s dramatic U-turn, now accusing the EC of setting a bad precedent by ordering a rerun in select polling stations.
He noted that the NPP had previously challenged the election results and sought legal intervention, which led to the court quashing the outcome. However, without any official declaration by the Electoral Commission, the NPP, through its General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, held a press conference insisting they had won the election—and announced the party’s decision to boycott the rerun, citing alleged bias on the part of the EC.
Yet, despite this public boycott, Hon. Abanga revealed that the NPP’s own agents were present and actively supervising the distribution of election materials ahead of the rerun scheduled for July 11, calling their actions contradictory and politically insincere.

Touching on the broader political climate, Hon. Abanga expressed confidence in the current administration under President John Dramani Mahama. He asserted that within just six months, the NDC government has demonstrated remarkable governance, winning the hearts of many Ghanaians. He pointed to significant strides in education, infrastructure, the fight against corruption, and efforts to tackle illegal mining (galamsey) as clear indicators of progress.
He concluded by assuring party supporters and the general public of a resounding victory for the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, Awura Abena Aubyn, in the upcoming rerun. According to him, “There is no doubt that Awura Abena Aubyn will secure the seat for the NDC. The people of Ablekuma North have seen the difference, and they are ready to vote decisively for change and competent leadership.
