The Abuakwa South Municipal office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Eastern Region has taken a bold step to curb the growing destruction caused by illegal mining activities in the area.

Led by the Municipal Director, Mr. Aikins Ofori, the NADMO team embarked on an extensive monitoring tour on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, to assess the environmental impact of mining operations across several communities, including Kyebi Akwadum, Potrase, Akyem Apedwa, and Akyem Asafo.

During the inspection, the team discovered disturbing scenes of environmental damage. In several areas, miners had blocked major waterways and diverted river courses to support their mining activities, posing a serious threat to both the environment and nearby communities.
At Potrase, the situation was particularly alarming. The team found deep pits dug beneath high-tension electricity poles and right in the middle of access roads that connect farmlands and villages. These activities have not only made movement difficult but have also created dangerous conditions that could lead to accidents or even electrocution.

A local farmer, Nana Yaw, shared his frustration with the NADMO officials. He explained that the destruction of roads has made it nearly impossible to transport his farm produce to the market, leading to huge post-harvest losses. He pleaded with authorities to take urgent action to protect the livelihoods of farmers and restore access routes.

Speaking to the media after the tour, Mr. Aikins Ofori expressed deep concern about the level of environmental destruction caused by illegal miners.

Mr. Ofori also urged local communities to support the fight against illegal mining by providing information to the authorities and discouraging young people from engaging in the practice.

The inspection tour forms part of NADMO’s broader efforts to protect lives, preserve the environment, and ensure sustainable development within the Abuakwa South Municipality.
