A businessman and philanthropist, Michael Asare Jumbo, has expressed deep concern over the ongoing struggle against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the country. He believes that one of the major reasons the fight has not been successful is the lack of strong commitment from some security personnel.

Speaking on the issue, Mr. Jumbo explained that the security agencies in Ghana have the capacity, resources, and manpower to clamp down on galamsey operations. However, according to him, the problem lies in the willingness and dedication of those tasked to protect the nation’s natural resources.

He stressed that illegal mining has caused serious damage to the environment, especially to the country’s water bodies, farmlands, and forests. Communities that depend on these natural resources for daily living are suffering the most. Farmers are losing their lands, rivers are turning muddy and unsafe for drinking, and many livelihoods are being threatened. Mr. Jumbo also pointed out the economic impact of galamsey. He noted that the destruction of natural resources does not only harm the environment, but it also weakens the country’s ability to sustain agriculture, tourism, and long-term development. He said that if the situation is not controlled, future generations may struggle to access clean water and fertile land.

He called on the heads of security agencies to show leadership and ensure that officers on the ground perform their duties without fear or favor. He urged them to be firm, transparent, and accountable in enforcing the law.

“Ghanaians are suffering because of this situation,” he said. “If the security agencies take their responsibilities seriously, we can save our environment and build a better future for our children.”

Mr. Jumbo hopes that his call will encourage stronger action and renewed commitment in the ongoing fight to protect Ghana’s natural resources. He believes that with unity, honesty, and determination, the country can overcome the galamsey challenge and preserve its environment for generations to come.
