The Board Chairman of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has called for a collective national effort to end illegal mining (galamsey), warning that environmental degradation poses a serious threat to Ghana’s future development.

Dr. Ofosu Ampofo made the remarks during the 75th anniversary celebration of Bunso Cocoa College, where he addressed students, staff, alumni, and invited guests at the historic institution.Speaking on the effects of galamsey, he stressed that sustainable development cannot be achieved in a polluted environment, particularly when vital water bodies are being destroyed.

“A polluted river cannot produce the best outcome,” he stated, urging all stakeholders to take responsibility for protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

He noted that illegal mining activities continue to contaminate major rivers and destroy fertile agricultural lands, especially within cocoa-growing communities. According to him, this threatens cocoa production, food security, and the health of communities that depend on these water sources for their daily needs.
