The commission was done on Friday, February 20, 2026, by the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama. The event drew traditional authorities, industry leaders, government officials, and members of the diplomatic corps.

In a keynote address, President Mahama underscored the strategic importance of developing a robust domestic steel industry to drive Ghana’s infrastructure ambitions and strengthen its position as a regional economic leader. He referenced the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme, which includes major investments in roads and highways, railway modernisation, bridges and interchanges, energy transmission lines, affordable housing, and industrial parks.

According to the President, these projects rely heavily on iron and steel production, reinforcing the close relationship between infrastructure development and industrial strategy. “This is how infrastructure becomes industrial strategy,” he stated. He further noted that the government’s 24-Hour Economy Programme is particularly significant for energy-intensive sectors such as steel manufacturing, as it promotes continuous production and enhances industrial efficiency.

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, described the commissioning of the plant’s Phase II expansion as a significant milestone in Ghana’s industrial transformation agenda. She observed that the Ningo-Prampram enclave is steadily evolving into a vibrant industrial hub.

Hon. Ofosu-Adjare explained that the government’s Feed the Industry Programme prioritises the use of locally available raw materials, particularly scrap metal, for domestic processing instead of exporting them in raw form. She added that the ban on the export of selected scrap materials is already bolstering local manufacturing by redirecting critical inputs to Ghanaian industries.

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, also called for a dedicated and reliable power supply to sustain industrial growth within the enclave.

The commissioning of the SBMS plant is expected to substantially increase local steel production capacity, generate employment, and contribute to Ghana’s broader industrialisation drive.

Dr. Awusi was accompanied by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Administration and Finance, Mr. Musah Sibiri Hamidu, as well as directors and officers of the Authority.
