An Eastern Regional Communications Team member of the governing party, Baba Alhasan, has called on cocoa farmers to place their trust in the administration of John Dramani Mahama, citing what he described as the President’s honesty and commitment to improving the sector.

Speaking on Radio 100.7 FM in an interview with host Nana Kwabena Addo, Mr. Alhasan stated that although a bag of cocoa sells for approximately $2,887 on the international market, the government purchases it from farmers at $2,587, representing about 70 per cent of the world market price.
He alleged that the previous administration left the cocoa sector heavily indebted and urged farmers to have confidence in the current government’s reform efforts.

According to him, plans to expand local cocoa processing will enhance value addition and ultimately increase returns to farmers.
Mr. Alhasan also commended the Board Chairman of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, and the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Randy Abbey, for implementing salary reductions among top management.

He noted that COCOBOD executives have taken a 20 per cent salary cut, while senior staff have accepted a 10 per cent reduction, describing the move as a demonstration of leadership and shared sacrifice.
Mr. Alhasan further expressed appreciation to President Mahama for what he termed decisive steps to stabilise the cocoa industry and improve conditions for farmers.
