The Business Development & Research, AfCFTA & Strategic Partnerships, and Agribusiness Department of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), through its AfCFTA and Strategic Partnerships Unit, has organized a two-day capacity-building workshop on the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement within Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

The training, held in Accra in collaboration with the Africa Trade Academy, aimed at strengthening the technical knowledge of staff to effectively support Free Zone Enterprises under the AfCFTA framework.

Opening the session, Director of the Department, Mr. Edward Adu-Ntiamoah, urged participants to adopt a forward-looking approach, stressing that the knowledge acquired would shape the next phase of GFZA’s engagement under the AfCFTA. He noted that building internal expertise is critical to positioning Ghana’s Free Zones to take advantage of emerging continental trade and investment opportunities.

The Dean of the Africa Trade Academy, Mr. Dode Seidu, facilitated the training, guiding participants through key thematic areas of the AfCFTA Agreement. These included the Protocol on Trade in Goods, Rules of Origin and their implications for SEZs, certification procedures, compliance requirements, and the application of AfCFTA operational tools.

Through practical sessions and case studies, participants gained hands-on insights into aligning SEZ operations with AfCFTA requirements to enhance competitiveness, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote long-term sustainability.

The training forms part of efforts to strengthen the Department’s technical and advisory capacity in its role as the focal point on AfCFTA matters within GFZA. It also enhances the Authority’s ability to support Free Zone Enterprises in accessing preferential trade benefits while aligning its policies with Ghana’s national AfCFTA implementation strategy.

The initiative underscores GFZA’s commitment to positioning Ghana’s Free Zones as competitive hubs for intra-African trade, attracting investment, strengthening regional value chains, and advancing the country’s broader industrial and trade agenda.
