The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah- Kofi Buah, has appealed to Ghanaians and stakeholders to demonstrate unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining and safeguarding the country’s natural resources.
During a working visit to the Ministry by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Hon.Buah emphasized that the battle against environmental degradation transcends ecological concerns, directly impacting the survival and well-being of present and future generations.
The Minister outlined the government’s five-pillar strategy to curb the scourge of illegal mining, known as Galamsey, highlighting extensive stakeholder engagements to raise awareness, bridge gaps, and garner collective buy-in and advocacy.

He reiterated the government’s uncompromising resolve to protect public health and the environment, with significant investments in coordinated enforcement and stakeholder engagement, including the ordinary Ghanaian.
“It is about the heart and mind of every Ghanaian; we are all killing ourselves if we don’t act to protect our forests and water bodies,” He stressed.
He acknowledged progress in land reclamation and forest restoration, outlining key interventions such as the establishment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Secretariat to harmonize law enforcement efforts.
A five-pronged strategy focusing on stakeholder engagement, regulatory reforms, and alternative livelihoods underscores the government’s commitment to responsible mining practices.
“Mining is the heartbeat of this country, but it must be done responsibly,” Minister Buah emphasized.
He urged Ghanaians to rise up with their voices and actions to stop the scourge of illegal mining, stating,
“We are all in this together; let us make our environment congenial by stopping illegal mining.”
The Minister’s message is clear: collective action is needed to protect Ghana’s natural resources and ensure a sustainable future.
